Why CloudStack Private Cloud from IMT-Systems

CloudStack is the open-source enterprise cloud platform originally developed by Citrix and today maintained by the Apache Software Foundation. It powers some of the largest public clouds worldwide – including workloads of telecom providers, hosting providers and several government cloud platforms. At IMT-Systems you receive this mature platform as a fully dedicated private cloud in our data centers in Frankfurt am Main.

The real VMware vCloud Director alternative

If you have been working with VMware vCloud Director or a similar multi-tenant cloud platform, CloudStack is the economically and functionally best alternative. You get all the central enterprise features:

  • Virtual Datacenters (VDC) with dedicated resource pools
  • Self-service portal for your users – provisioning of VMs, networks and storage without operator intervention
  • API-driven with REST API, CloudMonkey CLI and Terraform provider
  • Multi-tenancy with tenant separation at network and storage level
  • Templates, ISOs and snapshots for rapid provisioning
  • Integrated load balancer and firewall (NSX or VR)
  • LDAP / Active Directory integration and SAML SSO

And all this without per-socket licensing costs, without Broadcom-driven price adjustments and without strategic dependency on a single vendor.

Sovereign cloud without hyperscaler risks

Unlike AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, you receive a physically dedicated cloud platform – no shared hypervisor resources, no hidden sub-processors, no US jurisdiction. All data remains exclusively in our data centers in Frankfurt am Main, under German law and fully GDPR compliant.

This makes CloudStack the natural choice for:

  • Federal and state authorities with high sovereignty requirements
  • Healthcare providers with patient data and HL7 workloads
  • Financial service providers with BaFin/MaRisk requirements
  • Energy providers with critical infrastructure (KRITIS) classification
  • Industrial companies with intellectual property protection needs

Spine-leaf network architecture

Our CloudStack platform is based on a modern spine-leaf network architecture with Dell OS10 switches and VLT aggregation. This means predictably low latency between all VMs (east-west traffic), full bandwidth utilization without bottlenecks and horizontal scalability without complete re-architecture.

At application level we support VLAN, VXLAN and VLAN-isolated networks per tenant – including micro-segmentation via NSX-T or Tungsten Fabric.

Ceph as storage backend

As storage layer we use Ceph with triple replication on pure NVMe/SSD storage. This provides:

  • Consistent performance even under concurrent workloads
  • Self-healing on disk or node failure
  • Linear scaling by adding more OSDs
  • Block, object and file storage from a single system
  • Snapshots, clones and instant provisioning

Typical use cases

Migration from AWS / Azure / GCP: Public cloud repatriation for cost or compliance reasons. We help with image conversion and workload migration.

VMware vCloud migration: Strategic diversification after the Broadcom acquisition. CloudStack templates can directly take over many VMware workloads.

Multi-tenant hosting: You are a service provider yourself and need a multi-tenant cloud for your customers? CloudStack is the standard tool for exactly this use case.

Development and test environments: Self-service for developer teams with clearly separated resource pools, quotas and automatic cleanup.

DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code: Full automation via Terraform, Ansible and Pulumi – with your own image pipelines.

CloudStack vs. OpenStack

CloudStack and OpenStack are the two leading open-source cloud platforms. In comparison, CloudStack offers:

  • Simpler architecture – a single management server instead of 30+ microservices
  • Lower operational effort – ideal for medium-sized cloud platforms
  • Faster deployment – productive cloud in days, not months
  • More stable API guarantees – backward compatibility across major versions

If you have specific requirements that only OpenStack covers, we will advise you honestly – and can provide both platforms.

Personal support

You always reach cloud-engineering staff with direct CloudStack experience – no first-level tickets, no scripts. We help with architecture design, custom templates, multi-tenant setup and performance tuning.
